Ford Transit VanThe transit van, especially the plain white variety, has become very much part of our culture. Indeed, the term ‘white van man’ has entered into our modern day vocabulary. The legendary vehicle was conceived and developed by one of the worlds great motor companies, Ford.

Though a common site on British roads for almost half a century, the history of the transit van began in Germany in the early 1950s. The first Ford Transit was launched as the FK 1000 and built in Cologne. From 1961 the FK1000 was branded the Ford Transit Taunus, a name it kept until production ended in 1965.

Following the end of Taunus production, there emerged the Ford Transit as we know it today. The vehicle was produced as Ford bid to emerge as leaders in the international commercial van market. While the Taunus had been big in Germany the Ford Thames van had enjoyed similar success in the United Kingdom. But Ford needed a vehicle which could enjoy international renown, hence the birth of the Transit as we know it today. The new vehicle was launched in February 1965 and was built at Langley in Berkshire. As production increased the manufacturing process was switched to the English south coast at Southampton.

As the Ford Transit has grown in popularity over the decades, it has evolved. Each version has been labelled a ‘Mark’ and so far the vehicle is on Mark 7. Mark 1 production was the longest run of any of the generations ending in 1978 after 13 years of production.

The Mark 1 was powered by the Essex V-4 1.7L or 2.0L engine. A diesel option was also offered. In 1978 the Mark 2 was rolled out complete with a restyled front and changes to the vans interior. High performance versions of the vehicle were also developed for the emergency services.

The next development came with the Mark 3 in 1986 and the vehicle underwent a minor facelift in 1991 as it entered its Mark 4 era. By 1994 the Mark 5 was rolled out. The changes this times were much more radical as the vehicle received a redesigned nose as well as a new style dashboard. The Transit Hallmark was also launched in 1995 to celebrate the Ford Transits 30th anniversary.

The van entered the new millennium with its Mark 6 version. It was a redesign carried out by Fords United States operation and was available as rear or front wheel drive. By 2006 the Ford Transit received a new front end design and the gear stick was fitted on the dashboard as the history of the vehicle took another step forward and the Mark 7 was launched.
