The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants
and Children is a short term support program that provides nutrition education
services, counseling, healthy food packages, as well as numerous other
associated benefits to eligible pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and
children under age five at no cost to the participant. These programs were
designed to help provide young children and their mothers with the education and
means of obtaining adequate nutrition to improve their lives, health, and
academic abilities.
WIC is available to all kinds of
families whether single, married, working or not. Mothers, fathers,
grandparents, foster parents, or other legal guardians of a child under age five
are all eligible to apply. Federal funding is provided by the United States
Department of Agriculture and is administered by the Pennsylvania Department of
Health, Bureau of Family Health, Division of WIC,
www.health.state.pa.us.
